There
is more to a job lay-off than appears on the surface. Turn
lemons into lemonade when you are faced with your next layoff.
Take advantage of your layoff by keeping the lines of communication
open between you and your boss. You cannot get what you need
unless you ask for it and following these five tips.
1. Make yourself irreplaceable to begin with.
Understand what your boss wants and perform accordingly.
When job layoffs are required, chances are your boss will
think
of the least productive employees first. Since the company
or
department is operating on a shoe string, keeping the business
going will require the most productive employees.
2. Take the things you need
Don't leave without letters of commendation, letters of
recommendations, and awards you have won. It is absolutely
essential you have every item available to prove to your
next company your potential as a top notch employee.
3. Look for a new job now.
When you see signs your department or your company is having
serious financial problems and has started laying off, start
looking for
a new job right away. If you see employees getting laid off
in
your company or your department, that is probably the most
glowing sign that you may be faced with a layoff down the
road.
4. Don't argue with your boss if your name comes up for
a layoff.
Instead of arguing, be ready to negotiate for things such
as job
search assistance. Ask your company if they can help you
with resume services and interview techniques. You can also
negotiate
a severance package.
5. Don't take your layoff personal.
Companies have budgets and cost. If a company cannot make
their budget it can be any number of facts which have nothing
to do with an individual employee. In America the best employees
get laid off all the time, and it has nothing to do with
their abilities or performance.
Go to an online portal such as yahoo, click
on "jobs" find your city, and look for a job in your town.
