The last of the interest only loans that landed homeowners into the worst foreclosure
crises ever are in the process of maturing and homeowners are finding it difficult
to pay for the higher adjusted payments. Some of you simply purchased a home you
could not afford and have struggled to make the payments from the beginning, others
are out of work or underemployed.
The Obama Administrations' Making Homes Affordable program includes a temporary and
then permanent program to decrease your monthly mortgage payment.
At this date about 250,000 homeowners have had their payments lowered, and another
150,000 who started the program, found another program to lower their payments
and did not need the federal program. Other homeowners did not qualify, mostly
because they did not send in all of the requested documentation or they did not have
the income.
The Making Homes Affordable program will lower your monthly mortgage payment, or
make foreclosure more affordable, or help you with a deed-in-lieu of foreclosure
program.
Contact your local HUD-approved housing counselor for help. The help is free, so stay
clear of the fraudulent programs that charge you to do this free federal service.
